India is home to the world’s largest Facebook audience, with 314 million users as of January 2023, accounting for an impressive 10.6 percent of all Facebook users. Additionally, the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil, each had well over 100 million Facebook users. In 2022, Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms generated a revenue of over 116 billion U.S. dollars, down from 117.9 in 2021, and the first decrease in annual revenue since 2009. Net income also took a hit, declining by over 40 percent year-over-year. Moreover, in 2022, Meta's average revenue per user (ARPU) was 39.6 U.S. dollars - a three percent decrease compared to the previous year, another unwelcome first for the company. These financial contractions are related to the normalization of business after a boom during the global COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the rise of strong competitors such as TikTok. In the fourth quarter of 2022, a little over 50 percent of U.S. users’ news feed content on Facebook contained posts from friends and people they followed, whilst almost seventeen percent of posts were completely unconnected to the user, meaning that this content was not related to their Facebook friends, or people, pages, nor groups that they followed. Moreover, the vast majority of news feed content did not have links attached.Despite being a readily available source of news and current affairs, the platform is challenged with a variety of misleading and harmful content. In the fourth quarter of 2022, 1.3 billion fake Facebook accounts were removed from the platform. Additionally, for the same period, 6.4 million pieces of content were actioned for containing bullying and harassment content.
