A comparison of standardized ESG scores of the 25 largest companies in the world shows significant differences between ESG score providers in many cases. While there was broad agreement in some cases - for example, with semiconductor manufacturers Taiwan Semiconductor and NVIDIA - other cases saw significant divergence. Electric car manufacturer Tesla is a good case in point: MSCI had the equivalent score of around 64 out of 100 (indicating the company is slightly above average); Sustainalytics rated the company an equivalent of 43 (slightly below average); and S&P gave an ESG score of 15 (well below average). A similar story could be seen with major companies such as Apple, Tencent and Berkshire Hathaway.
